We have been breeding and exhibiting wire-haired dachshunds in both standard and miniature sizes, on a limited scale, for over 35 years. The miniature wires started with a bitch (Vienda Black Bonnet) and a dog (Vienda Brindle Beret) from the Vienda kennel of Miss Harriman. All the standard wires are directly descended from our first red bitch, Ir Ch Sweetmount Songbird, bred in Ireland by Ben and Peggy Allen. To date there have been 23 Lesandnic owned or bred champions in three countries, including one brindle miniature long-haired dog – Ir Ch Coleacre Radiant Romeo (Dudley) thought he was a wire, anyway.

Our bitches have very few litters as we only breed to produce puppies for ourselves. Puppies are occasionally for sale but only to permanent homes, whether they are for exhibition or not. Lesandnic puppies are only sold on the understanding that if for some reason in the future they can not be kept, they will be returned to us. Fortunately, this seldom happens.

We do not always keep the "best" puppy ourselves, and are very happy for other people to succeed in the ring or in the nursery with our stock, and to date there have been 7 Lesandnic champions owned by other people, plus several Ch show winners. Our dogs, rarely used at stud, also produce winners for other people, and are behind many successful wires in the ring today.

Good temperament is an essential part of our breeding strategy, as all our dogs live in the house as members of the family, first and foremost.  Soundness and conformation are also important, as being a Lesandnic means lots of healthy exercise, both on and off the lead, and in and out of water.

Our dachshunds frequently take part in activities other than "showing" - we have had four KC "Good Citizens" (one original, 3 bronze and Hattie is working towards her gold award) and hope to have more, and have embarked on agility training too. Most of our dogs enjoy going to ground, and we have started tracking, and are looking forward to working our dogs under IKC rules in 2008 (or as soon as the IKC get a working test organised!).

We live in Northern Ireland, and Lesandnic has been the leading wire-haired dachshund kennel in Ireland for many years, producing Irish and UK champions and CC winners, including Crufts BOB winners and IKC Hound Group finalists. Our dogs all live in the house.

Lesley used to live in England, and we frequently travel back and forwards, attending shows and meetings. This means the dogs are all good travellers, too.

Both of us award CCs and Green Stars in all varieties of dachshund. We should add that before wire-haired dachshunds joined the household, we had black labradors. Joan owned the first Northern Irish bred lab to win a first at Crufts, and our well known Collinhome Pancho won IKC Ch groups under the likes of Catherine Sutton back in the late sixties.
